Ion Pump Cabling Procedure

If any step in these procedures cannot be accomplished as written, do not continue. Consult with C. Kurtz or L. Ribaud for instructions.

Note that the red "Power" and yellow "HV Enable" buttons on the controllers, as built, have lamp indicators built in. However, you cannot trust these lamps to work. In particular, a dark button cannot be taken as an indication that it is in the "off" position. Instead, check the physical position of the switch (flush with the panel for "on", extending slightly forward for "off").

Disconnecting a pump

  1. Set power supply controller to display output voltage (typically, this requires pressing the white "2" key, also marked "Volts"). The display should show 5600±300 volts for a unit in working condition.
  2. Press yellow "HV Enable" button to turn off the HV supply. Button should pop out slightly from the controller front panel. Wait for the voltage to fall to zero (display reads "0000 V"); if left long enough it will display an error message ("Err 3") instead.
  3. After the high voltage has fallen to zero, press the red "Power" button to turn off the controller. Button should pop out slightly from the controller front panel.
  4. Disconnect controller AC power cord from AC outlet (do not disconnect AC cord at controller end only). AC cord must remain disconnected as long as any HV connection is open.
  5. Remove HV cable from pump and/or controller as required.

Connecting a pump

  1. Ensure that controller AC cord is not plugged into an AC outlet.
  2. Ensure that the red "Power" and yellow "HV Enable" buttons are in their "off" positions, extending slightly from the front of the controller panel.
  3. Connect HV cable to pump and to controller. Make sure the interlock connections are in place.
  4. Connect controller AC cord to AC outlet. If the cord was disconnected from the controller, connect the power cord to the controller before connecting it to AC power.
  5. Press red "Power" button to apply power to the controller. Display should light.
  6. When the display shows "0000 V", press yellow "HV Enable" button. Display should default to voltage indication.
  7. Verify that controller HV output reaches proper value (5600±300V).
  8. Set controller display mode as desired.
